One in four people in the country is unemployed between lockdowns

Unemployment at worst level in the country, crossing 24%

26.3 in urban areas while 23.7 in rural areas, the situation could worsen if the lockdown continues.

A nationwide lockdown has been declared following the Corona virus, which lasted more than two months, during which time unemployment in the country has also risen. The agricultural sector has also taken a break due to the closure of industry and transportation. This situation is affecting the livelihood of the people. Unemployment was estimated at 24% during the entire lockdown, compared to an increase last week. So one in four people has become unemployed

This information was given in the latest figures released by the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). This figure is also a kind of record as if we look at the previous months, the unemployment rate was claimed to be 5-6%. In which the lockdown caused such a surge that it increased and crossed 24%. Unemployment rose in the country during the week of May 24. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, stood at 24.3%. Which was 24% the week before. Unemployment averaged 24% during the entire lockdown.

During the lockdown, agricultural activities continued in the rural areas which resulted in people getting small and big jobs in the agricultural sector but the cities came to a complete standstill. As a result, the unemployment rate in the cities also increased. According to CMIE, the unemployment rate was 26.3% in urban areas and 23.7% in rural areas. Although the unemployment rate in the villages was many times higher than before, it was three per cent higher in the cities than in the rural areas. If we look at the percentage, one out of every four people has become unemployed. Which is by far the highest unemployment rate in the country.

Last year, when there was no Lockdown and Corona epidemic, there was a heated debate over a report by the NSSO claiming that unemployment was the highest in 45 years. However, the figures were not officially released. The figure claimed that the unemployment rate in the country stood at 6.1% during the year 2017-18 which is considered to be the highest in 45 years. However, due to the current lockdown, all records have been broken and the unemployment rate has crossed 24% for the first time. Earlier, on May 5, the percentage was around 27.
