Outgoing US President Donald Trump honored Prime Minister Narendra Modi with one of America's highest military honors, the Legion of Merit. PM Modi was honored for playing a key role in taking bilateral strategic relations with the US to new heights and establishing India as a global superpower.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked President Trump for the honor. He said the honor establishes that India-US relations have become stronger. I am thrilled to be honored with the American Legion of Merit Award. This honor is a testament to the fact that the strategic partnership between India and the United States has reached new heights.

He said that the 21st century presents many challenges as well as many opportunities. The Prime Minister tweeted that the India-US partnership could take advantage of the vast potential of our people’s unique power to provide global leadership for the benefit of all humanity.

India's Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu received the award on behalf of the Prime Minister at the hands of US National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien at the White House on Monday. O'Brien tweeted that President Trump has honored Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Legion of Merit Award for taking the Indo-US strategic partnership to new heights. The Legion of Merit Award is given to heads of foreign governments

"This award establishes the vision and determination of Prime Minister Modi to establish India as a superpower globally," the State Department said in New Delhi. Senior leaders, including BJP President JP Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah, said the prestigious award establishes Prime Minister Modi's acceptance as a global leader and his acceptance of his vision, resolute leadership, and diplomacy. In another tweet, O'Brien said Trump has also honored Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with the Legion of Merit Award. The ambassadors of Australia and Japan in Washington DC accepted the award as representatives of their leaders.
